We are the farmers!
Well, we are TRYING to be the farmers…there’s a HUGE difference. Like playing a doctor on TV and actually being a doctor. Right now, we are playing at being farmers…but maybe if we say it enough it will become so.
Manifest it into existence. Isn’t that what the young people are saying these days?
Well, farmers or not, we are Chris and Katie and we’ve dreamed of living on a large piece of property for decades.
Allow me to give a very brief history. We met at Emory as mere 18 year olds. We dated for 7 years, moved to Homer, Alaska for a year, got married barefoot on the beach, lived on a state park for 5 years, started a family (if I may brag a little; 3 beautifully wonderful amazing children), moved back to the ‘burbs where we lived happily enough for 18 years.
Along comes 2020, a little virus, and the ability to work from home.
Country life called louder than ever before.
We finally found our new home and moved here the summer of 2024. We haven’t looked back since. To say we love it here is the understatement of the year. We are truly happy, all of us, including kids and dogs….especially the dogs.
We have to give credit to our kids though. It was a scary transition for them. Our eldest was away in college but we still had a high schooler and middle schooler at home with us when we moved. Not exactly an easy age to up and move school and friends. But did I mention our kids are amazing? They are.
The house we found came with a field of blueberry bushes. It didn’t take long (actually only about 2 weeks) before we realized there was no way we were going to be able to consume all the blueberries. We invited friends and family to come pick but still we were being overwhelmed by blueberries.
So the idea of a berry farm emerged.
The flowers? Well, we have yet to see what becomes of them. Katie just likes to grow things. Let’s see if she can keep them alive long enough to produce a flower.
One thing for sure, this whole thing is maybe more than we realized but so far, just the idea of having an endless supply of fresh cut flowers and spreading happiness to others is going to be worth it….we think.
Again, we aren’t 100% certain on the plan here but we’re figuring it out as we go, for better or worse.
